Vamanos

I watch as Rich and Al jog across the street and enter Bar None. Nancy is busy taking notes on her iPad. Juan’s voice in my head, “Este es un problema grande, mi amigo.”

“I know it’s a big fucking problem. You’re no help.” I say out loud. Nancy looks up from her notes with a puzzled expression.

“Just thinking out loud. Don’t mind me,” I say. Nancy hesitates, but then goes back to typing her notes.

Juan again, “Mis habilidades de karate fueron muy útiles en el departamento. Entonces no me hagas enojar. Este es mi cuerpo aquí.”

“OK, I know it’s your body. I’m sorry and thanks for saving Evan back there. We can’t afford to fight each other. We’ve got to work together.”

“…O uno de nosotros tiene que pero noyo.”

“Understood. This is a difficult situation for both of us. Let’s make the best of it.”

“Es fácillo que tu dices.”

“Look, I rescued you from that horrible prison. Have a little gratitude.”

Juan switches to English, “What’s that American expression, out of the frying pan, into the fire?”

I was unaware that Nancy had completely dropped what she was doing and was watching my exchange with Juan, at least the part she could hear. She puts a gentle hand on my arm, a look of concern on her face. “Are you OK, Sam?”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m OK. I can’t really talk about it.” Better to change the subject, “Hey, is what you’re doing on the record or off the record?”

“For now, it’s off the record, but Rich promised me an exclusive, when it’s all over and he has stopped the Cub from doing whatever.”

“Besides my immediate concern for Evan, it’s the whatever that scares me. Any clues on what that whatever might be?”

“All we know so far is that it has something to do with food. That’s why Michelle is in Norway. Terrorists blew up the Global Seed Vault yesterday. Rich isn’t sure if it’s related to what the Cub has planned, but it might be a piece of the same puzzle.”

“If he’s anything like his brother, the attack yesterday is only the tip of the iceberg.”

“That’s what we’re all trying to figure out. Hey, while we’re at it, can I write your story? The new body and everything? I mean this is a big deal. How’d you do it? What’s it like? And—.”

“Stop right there. This is a story I may never tell or even live to see the next chapter. There’s too much at stake. Maybe someday I’ll have something to say, but for now you never saw me, you know nothing about me and anything you do know is off the record.” I wait for her response. Nothing. “Understood?” I insist.

“I understand sort of. Look, if you decide to tell your story, will you tell it to me first?”

I smile. Something about Nancy and her youthful enthusiasm and big smile that I always liked. “You’re my one and only, except for Monica of course.” She playfully punches me in the arm. I look down at my watch.
